RECORD 40.8°C IN VIENNA

VIENNA, AUGUST 4 /SRNA–Reuters/ – Austria's national meteorological service, GeoSphere Austria, announced that it recorded a record temperature of 40.8 degrees Celsius in Vienna today, surpassing the previous record set in 2013 by 0.3 degrees.

The meteorological service said the temperature was measured in the northern Vienna district of Stammersdorf, noting that it is a preliminary reading.

The heatwave that swept across Central Europe at the end of last week has caused a range of problems, including drought, wildfires fueled by dry vegetation and extreme temperatures, as well as record-low water levels on the Danube River. In recent days, the receding river has revealed sunken ships, unexploded ordnance, and other submerged objects.

Experts also predict higher food prices as unfavorable weather conditions continue to affect agricultural crops.
