POWERFUL STORM BATTERS U.S. NORTHEAST

WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 26 /SRNA/ - Heavy rain and strong winds hit the northeastern United States, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights and leaving tens of thousands of people without power.
New York, Boston and Philadelphia were among the cities hit by the powerful fall storm.

Authorities warned of potentially severe flooding and road closures, AP reported.

"This storm is expected to bring major coastal flooding to the Mid-Atlantic over multiple high-tide cycles during the weekend," the National Weather Service said.

More than 75,000 households in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Massachusetts were without power as of 10.00 a.m. local time.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the storm was moving toward coastal areas of New York and Long Island.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani warned residents of the country's most populous city about strong wind gusts and the possibility of downed power lines, urging them not to make unnecessary travel arrangements.
