KRAKOW, OCTOBER 11 /SRNA/ – Police in Poland opened fire and killed a knife-wielding man on a street in the southern Polish city of Nowy Sącz, Krakow police spokesperson Katarzyna Cisło said.

"We received a report that a man armed with a knife was walking along Lwowska Street. The police ordered him to drop the knife, but the 41-year-old man did not respond to their commands," she told press.

The unidentified man then moved towards one of the police officers, prompting another officer to fire his service weapon.

The man was taken to hospital, where he died from his gunshot wound.

A prosecutor was called to the scene, and police have launched an investigation into the use of firearms by police officers.

Poland has been facing a wave of knife attacks in public places in recent days.

Yesterday, a 21-year-old woman stabbed three people near a school in central Warsaw – a 17-year-old girl, a 17-year-old boy and a 24-year-old man.

In attacks carried out by teenagers earlier this week, one person was killed and more than 10 were injured.
