MADRID, October 4 /SRNA/ - Police have cleared a migrant camp from a beach in the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta, which tens of thousands of people entered from Morocco more than two months ago, the Spanish Government said.
More than 72,000 people crossed the Spanish-Moroccan border and entered Ceuta at the end of July. Although most of them later returned, at least 10,000 remained in the enclave, putting pressure on local resources and fueling tensions.
Police moved migrants from Trampolin Beach, where around 3,000 people had been living in tents and makeshift shelters over the previous two months.
They were transferred to temporary accommodation, where their details will be registered, and they may also return to Morocco.
Tensions remain due to the presence of migrants sleeping outdoors in the Spanish enclave, which has a population of 80,000. Local residents held a protest yesterday and called on the migrants to leave.
Spanish King Felipe and Queen Letizia are expected to visit Ceuta on October 13 and 14.
