WASHINGTON, AUGUST 27 /SRNA/ - Chairman of the Special Committee for the Review of the Withdrawal from Afghanistan Sean Parnell said that his team of investigators had uncovered classified documents that the previous US administration had deliberately concealed from earlier investigations, Russia Today reported.
Parnell said his team had found highly significant documents that would “shed light on many questions and raise even more.”
“After the team reviewed these documents, it became clear why someone had tried to conceal them,” he said.
Parnell said Pentagon investigators looking into the chaotic withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan in 2021 would follow the evidence “wherever it leads and whoever it leads to.”
He promised veterans and the families of those killed a complete picture of how and why decisions were made during the disastrous withdrawal.
The discovery comes after years of accusations that former US President Joe Biden’s administration covered up failures related to the operation, which directly resulted in the deaths of a large number of US troops and, in the longer term, led to the Taliban coming to power in Kabul, as well as destabilization and an escalation of violence in the country.
Thirteen US service members and around 170 Afghans were killed in August 2021 when an Islamic State suicide bomber attacked the Abbey Gate during the evacuation.
During the chaotic withdrawal, the Taliban quickly seized control of Afghanistan, the government collapsed, and thousands of people gathered at the airport in Kabul in an attempt to leave the country.
