BUDAPEST, AUGUST 5 /SRNA-Reuters/ - The parliamentary group of the ruling Hungarian Tisza party has proposed that the parliament elect the country's new president on August 11, according to an official proposal published on the parliament's website.

The election of a new president and the drafting of a new constitution are key elements of Prime Minister Péter Magyar's plan to dismantle the power strongholds of former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, for which, Magyar claims, he "has a strong mandate given to him by the voters."

On July 13, the Hungarian parliament adopted a constitutional amendment enabling the termination of former President Tamás Sulyok's mandate. He resigned from the position on July 18.
