NAZIS COMMITTED GENOCIDE AT BABYN YAR

BIJELJINA, SEPTEMBER 28 /SRNA/ - On September 29 and 30, 1941, the Nazis committed genocide against Jews at Babyn Yar in Ukraine, killing 33,771 civilians, including women and children.

In addition to Jews from Kyiv, the Nazis killed Soviet prisoners of war, Roma and other hostages at the site during the war.

A total of between 100,000 and 150,000 people were killed at Babyn Yar during the German occupation.

Babyn Yar is a ravine in the western outskirts of Kyiv. The massacre at Babyn Yar provides clear evidence of the Wehrmacht's involvement in the Holocaust.

Many Jews were killed at Babyn Yar after September 1941 as well, although records of the crimes presented after World War II do not include those executed later.

Around 3,000 Jewish prisoners of war were killed in September and early October 1941. Those who were not Jewish, particularly captured Roma, were also killed at Babyn Yar.

The Nazis also used poison gas to execute any possible survivors.

In August 1943, in an operation led by former commander of the Sonderkommando 4a unit Paul Blobel, who was executed in 1951, Jewish inmates of a nearby camp were forced to exhume the mass grave and cremate the bodies that had been buried at Babyn Yar.
