MASS EVACUATION UNDERWAY AS SEVERE FLOODING HITS BANGKOK

BANGKOK, SEPTEMBER 27 /SRNA/ - Thousands of Bangkok residents have been evacuated to temporary shelters after days of heavy rain flooded homes, roads and businesses across the Thai capital, the city administration said.

Authorities closed schools and declared a state of disaster in 50 districts affected by flooding.

Around 4,900 people have been evacuated, while some 52,000 households have been affected so far.

More than 330 millimeters of rain fell in parts of Bangkok between September 24 and 27.

The rainfall began on Thursday and continued for several days, overwhelming drainage systems, AFP reported.
