NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 10 /SRNA/ - Cilia Flores, the wife of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, has asked a federal court to release her from prison pending trial due to a serious heart condition.

In a court filing, her lawyer Mark Donnelly said she deserves the opportunity to await trial under house arrest so that she can recover from a recommended cardiac catheterization, which could lead to additional invasive cardiac procedures.

“Before the US military incursion into Venezuela, Ms. Flores was physically healthy and was not taking any medication apart from a monthly injection to help manage mitral valve prolapse. She now has several prescribed medications, including some to be used in the event of a heart attack,” Donnelly stressed.

According to him, Flores has not received her monthly injection for mitral valve prolapse since she was arrested, NBC reported.

Flores, 69, and Maduro, 63, have been held in a Brooklyn jail since the US military arrested them in January during a raid on their home in Caracas.

The couple has been charged with conspiracy to import cocaine, as well as possession of firearms and various destructive devices.
