BELGRADE, MAY 21 /SRNA/ - The Russian state-owned company "Alrosa" has named a diamond weighing 79.83 carats after Serbian and world-renowned film director Emir Kusturica.

Large and unusual diamonds are often named after globally known personalities or events, and the diamond named after Kusturica was excavated on May 23, 2024, at the Nakyn mining field, Sputnik reported.

The diamond was named in honor of the Serbian director, who holds numerous significant awards in Russia, due to his contribution to strengthening friendship and cooperation among peoples, as well as promoting the Russian language and culture worldwide, as stated in the certificate.

"Alrosa" is a major Russian state-owned diamond mining company and one of the world’s largest diamond producers.

The company is headquartered in Yakutia, where Russia’s main diamond deposits are located.

Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded Kusturica the Order of Friendship for his outstanding contribution to strengthening relations between peoples and promoting the Russian language and culture worldwide.

Kusturica was also awarded by Moscow Patriarch Kirill with the Order of St. Seraphim of Sarov, First Class, on the occasion of the director’s 70th birthday, for his contribution to preserving traditional values and promoting Orthodox and cultural values.

The Serbian director also received his "star" in the Walk of Fame in Ulyanovsk in 2016, as part of a festival held in that city.
