SACRAMENTO, OCTOBER 12 /SRNA/ – A powerful storm has hit the California coast, where massive waves are destroying luxury homes, damaging coastal infrastructure and forcing residents to evacuate from their homes.
Waves several metres high in Long Beach have flooded sections of a wooden boardwalk more than a century old and crashed directly into houses built along the shoreline.
At least 13 facilities have been damaged, and residents have been prohibited from returning to their homes.
Among the affected facilities are luxury villas valued at several million dollars.
City authorities are attempting to prevent further destruction by placing huge sandbags and constructing protective embankments along the coast.
According to reports, Storm Rachel has further worsened conditions along a coastline already battered by powerful waves.
The situation has also been aggravated by unusually high water temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. California has declared a state of emergency due to weather conditions associated with El Niño, Sputnik reports.
