WASHINGTON, AUGUST 17 /SRNA/ – US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in an interview with The Times that US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 100% tariff on imported goods from the United Kingdom is not a bluff.
Greer warned that the US would no longer tolerate Britain using major American technology companies as penny box by imposing arbitrary and unfair taxes on US tech giants.
He stressed that the president is determined to implement this policy, but that the US has not set a specific deadline, leaving room for negotiations with the new British government.
The Trump administration is demanding that the United Kingdom abolish its digital services tax, under which the revenues of major US technology companies such as Amazon, Google, Meta and Apple are taxed at a rate of 2%.
Trump said in June that any country imposing a digital services tax would face a 100% tariff on all goods exported to the US, with the punitive measure overriding all agreements reached under existing trade agreements.
