GREEN SETS ANOTHER RECORD IN HYDROGEN-POWERED CAR

WENDOVER, AUGUST 12 /SRNA/ - British driver Andy Green, the first person to break the sound barrier in a car, has set another world speed record in a hydrogen-powered car, AP reported.

Green reached a speed of 653.908 kilometres per hour in a car powered by two hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines with a combined output of 1,600 horsepower, setting a record in the category of vehicles powered in this way, the International Automobile Federation /FIA/ said.

The 64-year-old retired Royal Air Force pilot drove across the crystalline surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats in the US state of Utah in a 9.75-metre-long car designed by British construction equipment manufacturer JCB.

The engines are modified versions of those used in the company’s heavy machinery. They mix pressurised hydrogen with air as fuel, generating enormous power and emitting only water vapour as exhaust.
