GERMAN POLITICIAN ASKS FOR FORGIVENESS FOR FASCISM AND WORLD WAR II

BERLIN, MAY 9 /SRNA - RIA Novosti/ - The Chairman of the German Council for Constitution and Sovereignty Ralph Niemeyer today asked for forgiveness for fascism and World War II, calling May 9 the day of liberation.

"I apologize for fascism and for the war. For us Germans, it is not a day of our capitulation, but a day of liberation from fascism," Niemeyer said in a video address in Russian.

Niemeyer stressed that those who are not celebrating Victory Day over fascism today consider themselves the losers.

"I thank the Soviet Union, and I thank Russia," Niemeyer added.

Foreign policy expert from the German BSW party Sevim Dagdelen called the persistent refusal of the German authorities to acknowledge the crimes committed by Nazi Germany unacceptable.

Dagdelen stated that Berlin does not want to admit that World War II was a colonial war of extermination and destruction on the territory of the Soviet Union, where 27 million people, mostly civilians, lost their lives during the war.

He believes that it is wrong for Germany to be "preparing" for a new war with Russia and that Berlin should talk to Moscow to achieve de-escalation.
