TEHRAN, JUNE 13 /SRNA–Reuters/ – The funeral of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei will begin in Tehran on July 4 and end with his burial in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad on July 9, state media reported.
“The ceremony will begin on July 4 and 5, when farewell services will be held at Imam Khomeini's Prayer Hall in Tehran. A funeral procession will take place in Tehran the following day, and another in Qom on July 7. A funeral procession will be held in Mashhad on July 9, after which he will be buried at the Imam Reza Shrine,” the statement said.
Khamenei was killed in Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran on February 28 of this year. He served as Iran's third president from 1981 to 1989. He held the title of Grand Ayatollah, and his tenure as Supreme Leader, which lasted 36 years and six months, made him the longest-serving head of state in Western Asia at the time of his death.
