FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY, THERE ARE MORE ELDERLY PEOPLE THAN CHILDREN

WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 4 /SRNA/ - For the first time in history, the number of elderly people globally has exceeded that of children, according to a new report by the US Census Bureau.

The report states that Europe already has the oldest population in the world, and that in 2025, people aged 65 or older made up 10.5 percent of the global population, surpassing the percentage of children in the world for the first time in history.

The RT reports that the turnaround is due to longer life expectancy and lower birth rates.

According to the UN, in recent years, about 132 million babies have been born worldwide annually, which is 10 million fewer than in the early 2010s.

The uneven global trend is demonstrated by the fact that in Africa in 2024, about 47 million babies were born.

According to the report, the decline in birth rates is particularly pronounced in Europe. Namely, only 3.55 million babies were born in the EU in 2024, compared to 6.8 million in 1964.

The report warns that demographic change could be even more pronounced in the coming decades.
