RIYADH, OCTOBER 10 /SRNA/ – A number of people were injured in an explosion at Riyadh International Airport, according to two eyewitnesses and two people familiar with the incident, while the passengers were evacuated from parts of the facility.
Earlier reports said that King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, had been evacuated following reports of an explosion.
One eyewitness said he saw the explosion and then several people lying injured on the ground inside the airport. More than a dozen ambulances arrived at the airport.
Today’s incident occurred amid missile attacks on Saudi Arabia by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who are linked to Iran. The airport had already been targeted twice this week, leaving four people dead and others injured, while one aircraft was severely damaged.
The flight-tracking website Flightradar24 showed that all flights to Riyadh had either been diverted or cancelled, with only a helicopter visible above the airport at one point.
The airport urged passengers to contact their airlines directly and check their flight status before travelling to the airport.
Kuwait Airways announced that it had cancelled flights to and from the Saudi capital due to the closure of Riyadh Airport amid the “security situation.”
