DRIVER WHO BROKE SOUND BARRIER IN CAR TRIES NEW LAND-SPEED RECORD

VENDOVER, August 10 /SRNA/ – British driver Andy Green, the first person to break the sound barrier in a car, has announced that he will take to the track in Utah tomorrow in a hydrogen-powered vehicle, aiming to set another land-speed record, AP reported.

Green will drive a vehicle called "Hidromax," which is 9.75 meters long and was built by British construction equipment manufacturer JCB.

The car is bright yellow, long and narrow, resembling a pencil. It is powered by two hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engines producing a combined 1,600 horsepower, adapted from engines used in the company’s construction machinery.

The engines mix pressurized hydrogen with air and then ignite it, producing powerful jets similar to those of aircraft engines.

Twenty years ago, Green set a land-speed record in a diesel-powered car, reaching a speed of 563.4 kilometers per hour on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah.

Green emphasized that he wants not only to add another entry to the Guinness World Records but also to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen as a clean energy source.
