DIESEL AND PETROL PRICES HIT RECORD HIGHS

BERLIN, SEPTEMBER 17 /SRNA/ — The price of a liter of diesel in Germany has reached a new record high of EUR 2.45, according to data from Germany's ADAC automobile club.

According to ADAC data, fuel prices in Germany have been rising steadily since the start of the conflict with Iran and disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The price of a liter of petrol in Germany has also reached a record high of EUR 2.30.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced earlier this week that the government would respond to rising prices, but no concrete measures have been announced so far.

His party, the Christian Democratic Union /CDU/, and its coalition partner, the Social Democratic Party /SPD/, have different views on how to address rising prices. The SPD is calling for a tax on oil companies, which Merz opposes.

Berlin introduced a two-month fuel tax relief measure at the beginning of the year, but it expired at the end of June.
