BEIJING, AUGUST 29 /SRNA/ — Chinese authorities must take decisive measures and make every effort in the rescue operation following a devastating landslide in Gyirong County in the Xizang Autonomous Region in southwestern China, a meeting of the leadership of the Communist Party of China concluded.

The meeting, chaired by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, noted that rescue operations so far had been carried out rapidly and in an orderly manner, with comprehensive efforts focused on relocating affected people and addressing the aftermath of the disaster.

It was emphasized that China would provide emergency assistance to the disaster-affected area in Nepal and engage in international cooperation in the rescue effort, the China Media Group reported.

At the beginning of the meeting, Xi, who is also Chinese President and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, and other leaders paid tribute to the victims of the disaster that struck the Gyirong border port on Wednesday, Aug. 26.

The disaster occurred in a very cold region characterized by steep valleys, changeable weather, numerous surrounding glaciers and glacial lakes, as well as potential geological hazards, presenting significant challenges for emergency rescue operations.
