ALGIERS, SEPTEMBER 1 /SRNA/ – Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ordered the reintroduction of the death penalty for arsonists, after wildfires across the country killed at least 12 people and injured dozens, Russia Today reports.

Tebboune instructed the Government to amend the Criminal Code by September 15 to introduce the death penalty, with immediate execution, for individuals convicted of deliberately starting fires.

Prime Minister Sifi Ghrieb said the minister of justice had been instructed, in coordination with the secretary-general of the Government, to prepare a draft law to be review at a meeting of the Council of Ministers before being submitted to Parliament.

Although the death penalty remains part of Algeria's Criminal Code, no executions have been carried out since 1993.
