MOSCOW, OCTOBER 15 /SRNA-Reuters/ - A ceasefire agreement to allow repairs at the thermal power plant that supplies electricity to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant came into effect today, director general of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom Alexey Likhachev said.

"Our specialists are now heading to the site and beginning repairs. This is very important given the approaching autumn and winter period, the growing risks associated with low temperatures and, of course, increased consumption of diesel fuel. I sincerely hope that the ceasefire will be respected," Likhachev told reporters.

He added that the agreement had been reached with the mediation of the International Atomic Energy Agency /IAEA/.

The plant has repeatedly been damaged by shelling and drone attacks by the Ukrainian armed forces and has largely remained disconnected from the power grid since the conflict began in 2022. At present, only an auxiliary thermal power plant is operating, supplying the nuclear reactor with electricity and preventing its core from overheating.
