BERLIN, OCTOBER 10 /SRNA–Reuters/ – Germany will maintain sanctions against Russia over its war against Ukraine following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that his administration had temporarily lifted US sanctions on Russian fuel.
"The federal government has taken note of the US decision regarding supplies of Russian diesel," government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said in a statement.
He stressed that Germany’s position was clear.
"The federal government remains committed to the decisions on sanctions against Russia and is working with its European partners on further similar measures," Kornelius said.
According to him, Germany’s support for Ukraine remains unchanged, while diplomatic efforts to achieve a settlement are continuing.
Trump said yesterday that Russia had agreed to supply diesel to global markets in an effort to lower fuel prices.
He explained that his administration had temporarily lifted US sanctions on Russian fuel, which were intended to deprive Moscow of revenue for its war against Ukraine.
Diesel prices, which affect agriculture, home heating, and truck transportation, have risen to near-record levels, which pose a risk for Trump’s fellow Republicans ahead of the November 3 congressional elections, which will determine whether they retain their narrow control of Congress.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who visited Kyiv last weekend, has repeatedly stated that Germany, Ukraine’s largest donor in Europe, will not reduce its support.
