AT LEAST 16 DEAD IN FIRE AT CARE HOME

SANTIAGO, SEPTEMBER 12 /SRNA/ – At least 16 people died in a fire at a retirement home in southern Chile, local media report, citing authorities.

Photographs published by daily newspaper La Tercera showed huge flames on the roof of the building.

The tragedy occurred near the town of Pitrufquen in southern Chile. Ten people were rescued from the building and taken to hospital with injuries.

Several fire and rescue teams from neighboring towns were deployed to the scene.

Authorities said there were 26 people in the retirement home when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
