APPLE FACES $5.7 BILLION PATENT DAMAGES AWARD

WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 27 /SRNA/ - A US court has ordered Apple to pay more than $5.7 billion for infringing two patents held by Taction Technology.

Apple had been accused of using vibration-alert technology in iPhone and Apple Watch devices without authorization.

The technology giant said it disagreed with the ruling and planned to appeal.

The company maintained that it had not used Taction's technology.

Large damages awards are not uncommon in US patent cases, but they are often reduced on appeal, sometimes substantially, DPA reported.

The jury found that Apple had not willfully infringed the patents. Had it done so, the damages could have been tripled.
