APARTMENT FIRE KILLS FAMILY OF FIVE

CAIRO, JULY 9 /SRNA/ – Five members of the same family were killed in an apartment fire caused by a gas leak in Giza Province, west of the Egyptian capital Cairo, the state-run news website Al Ahram reported.

Preliminary investigations showed that the gas leak caused a fire in an apartment on the seventh floor of a building in the Omraniya district. The victims were a grandmother, her daughter and the woman's three children.

The grandmother was found dead inside the burned apartment, while her daughter and the three children were killed after jumping from the seventh floor in an attempt to escape the flames.

Civil defense teams and ambulances rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call, and the fire was brought under control, Xinhua reported.

The bodies were taken to a hospital, while prosecutors have launched an investigation into the incident.
