AI MODELS ACCESSED U.S. CENSUS DATA

WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 26 /SRNA-Reuters/ - Artificial intelligence /AI/ models developed by OpenAI accessed publicly available information on US government websites, including those of the Census Bureau and the Securities and Exchange Commission, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

An OpenAI spokesperson said the company "conducts extensive reviews of activity involving misaligned models and notifies organizations when it identifies potential impacts on their systems."

The spokesperson added that further details were expected as the work continued.

The review largely found "routine research tasks," while "some involved government websites" because models often turn to them "as authoritative sources of public information," the spokesperson said in a statement.
