AGREEMENT TO JOINTLY BUILD STABLE AND CONSTRUCTIVE STRATEGIC RELATIONSHIP

WASHINGTON, SEPTEMBER 26 /SRNA/ - Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump agreed to further enrich the substance of China-US relations and jointly build "a constructive and stable strategic relationship based on respect, fairness and equality".

Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan held talks over tea with Trump and his wife Melania Trump at the White House, China Media Group reported.

The Chinese president noted that this was his first state visit to Washington in 11 years.

"During this visit, we enriched the definition of China-US relations, agreed to jointly build a constructive and stable strategic relationship based on respect, fairness and equality, and achieved mutually beneficial results in the economic and trade fields that will be welcomed by the peoples of both countries and the international community," Xi said.

The Chinese president stressed that the prospects for China-US relations were bright and that this was a historical trend.

At the same time, he said, the path toward a brighter future is often winding and various difficulties and challenges will inevitably arise along the way, which he described as part of the natural course of development.

"I am ready to work with President Trump, with courage and a sense of responsibility toward history, to write an important chapter in the development of China-US relations", Xi stressed.

Trump said the Chinese president's state visit had been constructive and highly successful.

Through in-depth communication on US-China relations and major international and regional issues, the two sides achieved a number of positive results beneficial to both countries.

Trump expressed hope that he would continue to maintain close communication with Xi and that they would jointly guide the development of US-China relations.

Following the talks over tea, Xi and Peng Liyuan, accompanied by Donald Trump and Melania Trump, visited the U.S. National Archives.

The two presidential couples entered the Archives' central hall together, where they were briefed on the institution's history and its most important documents.

Xi said archival records preserve the wisdom of previous generations and provide inspiration for the future.

He said that over the past 250 years, the American people had pursued the American dream and built a strong nation and a prosperous home on the North American continent.

Xi said the Chinese people were carrying forward a 5,000-year cultural tradition and continuing to achieve new accomplishments on the path toward realizing the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

He added that China and the United States are two countries with their own distinct characteristics and that, although their histories, cultures, social systems and development paths differ, their peoples share the same aspiration for a better life.

"If we recognize and respect our differences, deepen mutual understanding and learn from one another, find the greatest common ground, expand the areas of cooperation and properly manage our differences, relations between the two countries can develop steadily and over the long term", Xi stressed.
