MEXICO CITY, JUNE 11 /SRNA/ – Long lines of fans formed outside the Azteca Stadium ahead of the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup and the first match between Mexico and South Africa.

Authorities introduced strict access restrictions in the area due to fears of protests, AP reported.

Fans in Mexico City were in high spirits, singing or simply waiting for the gates to open, while many wore colorful regional clothing.

Only a few cars managed to get close to the football stadium, which will host the opening of the World Cup for the third time.

Access roads within a radius of about 1.6 kilometers were completely closed, and police presence was visible everywhere.

These measures were introduced because a radical trade union and education workers have threatened protests and blockades.

During their protests in previous days, police units and the National Guard were deployed several times.

Union members are protesting against pension system reforms.
