BERLIN, AUGUST 22 /SRNA/ — Thirty-five police officers were injured and several football fans were detained after violence broke out during a German Cup match between Waldhof Mannheim and Kaiserslautern, police said.
A total of 85 people received medical treatment, while eight were taken to hospital. Their injuries are believed to be minor, a police spokesperson said.
Around 23,500 spectators attended last night's match at Mannheim's Carl-Benz-Stadion, including approximately 3,500 visiting supporters.
The atmosphere was tense, with pyrotechnics being set off repeatedly in the stands, DPA reported.
The situation escalated after the match ended goalless following 90 minutes of play.
After clashes between players on the pitch, some Kaiserslautern supporters set off fireworks in the seating area, prompting Mannheim fans to storm the pitch.
Police intervened to bring the situation under control. Around 1,400 security personnel were deployed for the match.
