VUKADIN: FIREFIGHTERS ON TREBEVIĆ, INACCESSIBLE TERRAIN HAMPERS EFFORTS

ISTOČNO SARAJEVO, AUGUST 29 /SRNA/ — Firefighters are continuing to battle a fire on Mount Trebević, while a shortage of personnel and inaccessible terrain are making their work more difficult, Territorial Fire and Rescue Unit Chief for Istočno Sarajevo Njegoš Vukadin told SRNA.

He said crews worked overnight to prevent the fire from spreading at several locations and that the fire currently poses no threat to buildings.

“We have been continuously up on the mountain. I sent a crew to the area above the village of Studenkovići to check whether the fire was threatening homes,” Vukadin said.

He pointed to a shortage of personnel as one of the main problems.

“This morning we were told that 15 to 20 people from the forestry service would come, but nobody has arrived. What I can do is keep my crews up there, protect the buildings, and prevent the fire from entering the high forest,” Vukadin added.

He noted that the fire had been completely extinguished on Thursday, August 27, but that in terrain like this, fire can remain deep inside rocks and thick tree stumps.
