TREBINJE, MAY 6 /SRNA/ – Victory over fascism represents one of the central historical events in Serbian culture of remembrance, which is why it is very important to hold the Immortal Regiment March in Republika Srpska, Milana Babić, president of the Immortal Regiment of Srpska People's Patriotic Association, told SRNA.

"That is why we can say that this is one of the identity holidays of Republika Srpska, given the genocide we endured in World War II," Babić said.

She stressed that Republika Srpska was created precisely as a guarantee that genocide such as that committed in World War II would never happen again.

"At the level of world history, victory over the occult Third Reich represents one of the greatest victories in the history of humanity," Babić emphasized.

She called on all inheritors of the anti-fascist struggle to join the Immortal Regiment March in Republika Srpska on Victory Day, May 9.

Victory over Fascism Day is marked on May 9 in remembrance of that date in 1945, when the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany came into force, marking the end of World War II in Europe, which was the most massive conflict in human history and, in terms of human casualties, the most horrific, with around 60 million people killed.

The Serb people were at the forefront of the fight against fascism in the territory of the former Yugoslavia and suffered the greatest losses, while the Soviet Union made the greatest contribution to the defeat of fascism.

The former Yugoslavia, which at the time and throughout history was on the side of the Allies, suffered the greatest losses, which, according to the SFRY state commission, are estimated at 1.7 million people.
