TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT PERFORMED ON PATIENT WITH HEMOPHILIA A

BANJA LUKA, AUGUST 25 /SRNA/ - A total knee replacement was successfully performed at the University Clinical Centre /UCC/ of Republika Srpska on a patient with severe hemophilia A, representing a highly complex surgical procedure of exceptional importance to the patient, the UCC announced.

Due to hemophilia and a lack of clotting factors, microbleeding occurs in the joints, causing joint damage and the development of deformities, restricted movement and severe pain, the statement said.

"All of this leads to a significant reduction in the quality of life of these patients, in addition to their underlying condition, because they have difficulty moving and are unable to perform even basic daily activities," the UCC stated.

The procedure was performed by a surgical team from the Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic together with a team from the Clinic of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care, in cooperation with hematologists.

The patient, a middle-aged man with a severe knee deformity, had an uneventful postoperative recovery and returned to work and his everyday activities after some time.

The patient spent a period of time at the Orthopedics and Traumatology Clinic, where he received continuous care and appropriate physical therapy specifically tailored to patients with this condition.
