STUDENT VUK JANKOVIĆ WINS OUTSTANDING AWARDS IN MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICS

TREBINJE, SEPTEMBER 9 /SRNA/ - A student of the Jovan Dučić Gymnasium in Trebinje, Vuk Janković, once again achieved outstanding results this year at the most prestigious international competitions in mathematics and physics, it was said today at a reception held in his honor by Mayor Mirko Ćurić.

Janković won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Shanghai, his fourth appearance at the competition, while at his first-ever International Physics Olympiad, held in Bucaramanga, Colombia, he won a bronze medal.

“None of this would have been possible without the constant support I have received, first and foremost from my parents, friends, professors and mentors, but also from the city, which I am grateful to and which never forgets about me. I can count on that support at all times,” Janković said.

He added that what makes these achievements particularly significant is the fact that at such competitions, participants’ knowledge is tested against the best young mathematicians and physicists from around the world.

“You are measured against international standards, since these competitions bring together representatives of countries that have traditionally excelled in the formal and natural sciences. These include China, the United States, Russia, South Korea, and even North Korea this year,” Janković said.

According to him, preparation for international competitions lasts throughout the entire year, but achieving a top result requires more than just continuous work.

“No amount of preparation for competitions would be of any help if you did not have an initial dedication to the subject,” Janković explained.

Gymnasium Principal Dobroslav Slijepčević said that it means a great deal to him to have had the opportunity to be part of Vuk’s educational journey.

“My heart is full. It is an immense pleasure to play even a small part in Vuk’s education and life. I have known him since the seventh grade of elementary school, and we have worked together for years. I can say that today I consider him more of a friend than a student,” Slijepčević said.

He expects Janković to continue achieving outstanding results throughout the rest of his education, bringing even greater pride to Trebinje.

Trebinje Mayor Mirko Ćurić said that Vuk’s achievement represents a historic result for the area.

“At the level of BiH, this is a historic achievement by Vuk. No one has achieved such a result before,” Ćurić said, presenting Janković with a gold coin bearing the coat of arms of the City of Trebinje and a personal inscription as a token of appreciation for his work and outstanding achievements to date.

He particularly emphasized the importance of the fact that Vuk represents both Trebinje and the Jovan Dučić Gymnasium at the world’s biggest competitions.

He stressed the support that the city provides to talented and successful students, noting that it is not aimed solely at the most gifted students.
