PROJECT TO PRESERVE GAT HILL

GACKO, JULY 23 /SRNA/ – A project is underway in Gacko aimed at improving conditions for the preservation and promotion of the existing ecosystem and the cultural and historical heritage of the protected Gat Hill.

Gat Hill, also known as the "Herzegovinian Olympus", is located on the southern edge of the Gacko Field. Over its strategic location and rich history dating back to the First and Second World Wars, the Municipality of Gacko has designated it a protected area and memorial park, which is currently being redeveloped into a unique tourist attraction.

The six-month project, "Gat – Nature and History for the Future", is being implemented by the Gacko-based Gat Association. Its head, Saša Nikolić, said that a series of activities will be completed by the end of October, including the installation of a video surveillance system and high-resolution cameras to help protect the area.

The project also includes the procurement of 400 Austrian pine seedlings, which will be planted at suitable locations in cooperation with the Forests of Republika Srpska public forestry company to enhance the ecosystem.

Nikolić said that walking trails through the forested section of the protected area will be improved and clearly marked to ensure safe access for visitors. Directional and informational signs will also be installed, along with wooden benches, birdhouses, and feeding stations for game animals.

The Municipality of Gacko said the project also includes a public awareness campaign to inform local residents and target groups about the importance of Gat Hill, its potential, and the results achieved, with the aim of protecting, developing, and promoting the site.

The Gat – Nature and History for the Future project is being implemented under the Regional Programme on Local Democracy in the Western Balkans 3 - ReLOaD3, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme /UNDPI in partnership with 14 municipalities and cities across BiH, including Gacko.
