BANJA LUKA, JULY 9 /SRNA/ - Portal vein embolization will be performed for the first time at the University Clinical Center /UCC/ of Republika Srpska in Banja Luka, with the support of interventional radiologist Davor Mrđa from the Bežanijska Kosa Clinical Center in Belgrade.

Throughout today and tomorrow, six procedures will be carried out on oncology patients who have primary or secondary liver tumors and are not candidates for surgery.

Patients will undergo transarterial chemoembolization of the liver in the angio room of the Institute of Clinical Radiology.

The procedures will be performed by interventional radiologists Bojan Jovanić and Mile Čučak from the Institute of Clinical Radiology at the UCC of Republika Srpska, with support from Davor Mrđa.

One of the patients will undergo portal vein embolization. This is a major blood vessel that supplies blood to the liver.

Jovanić explained that the patient has a liver tumor larger than 10 centimeters, which cannot be operated on.

He stated that three procedures will be performed today, and the same number tomorrow.

"Today and tomorrow, we are treating patients from Foča and Bijeljina. Patients from all over Republika Srpska no longer need to seek treatment abroad," Jovanić emphasized.

The UCC noted that this intervention is of exceptional importance because until now, such patients were referred to treatment in Serbia.
