BROD, May 11 /SRNA/ - The “Lipa – Along the Route of the First Expulsion of Serbs in BiH” walking march brought together over 300 residents of Brod today, commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the exodus of the Serb population from the municipality.

Zoran Vidić, President of Brod’s Veterans’ Organization Presidency, reminded participants that on May 12, 1992 more than 12,000 Serbs were driven from their ancestral homes, with all their property burned and destroyed and the local infrastructure and economy laid waste.

Ankica Šukurma from Liješće today recalled the harrowing moments when, carrying her four-month-old son Vanja, she began the retreat toward Lipa.

“The journey was hard and exhausting. With a baby in my arms, we didn’t know where we were going, let alone why. Our convoy was shelled; they fired on us from Slavonski Klakar,” Šukurma reminded.

Brod Mayor Milan Zečević noted that the symbolism of today’s event points to a tragic chapter in the town’s history.

“We’re pleased we managed to involve so many young people—it means these memories are successfully being passed on to the next generation,” Zečević said.
