KOZARA IS PART OF SARAJEVO-LED PUSH: WHO WANTS TO BUY THE "MONUMENT" HOTEL?

BANJA LUKA, JULY 16 /SRNA/ - A bid to purchase the "Monument" Hotel in Kozara National Park points to an attempt to take over one of the most important tourist facilities at the heart of one of the most significant sites of Serb resistance and suffering, according to the Provjereno news portal.

Although the bidder is a company whose name is associated with a well-known business group from Dubai, the portal says an analysis of available documentation and public records raises more questions than answers, including the identity of the actual buyers and the source of the capital behind the offer.

According to documents reviewed by Provjereno portal, the bid was submitted by Dubai-based company Al Zarooni, which said it was prepared to acquire ownership of the hotel, retain all employees and invest EUR 10 million in its reconstruction and development.

However, publicly available information indicates that the company has recorded very limited business activity and that no transparent financial statements are available to confirm its capacity to undertake an investment of that scale.

The portal says the Al Zarooni Group's activities are primarily focused on real estate, construction and shopping centers in the United Arab Emirates rather than the hotel and tourism sectors. It therefore questions why a company with such a profile was engaged for the transaction and who ultimately stands behind the bid.

"Kozara is not merely a tourist destination. It is one of the most important symbols of Serb resistance and suffering during the Second World War, which is why any change of ownership of facilities within the national park carries significance far beyond the commercial aspect.

In many countries, sites of exceptional historical and national importance enjoy a special level of institutional protection, and transactions involving facilities located there are viewed through the prism of the public interest," the article states.

It adds that, in the case of Kozara, additional questions arise from what it describes as the non-transparent ownership structure of the bidder. If other interests stand behind the company that submitted the offer, it says, questions arise as to how the memorial character of the site would be treated in the future and whether its historical identity would be preserved.

"Strategically important sites such as Kozara receive special treatment from the state in many countries. Consequently, all facilities within such areas cannot be viewed solely from a commercial perspective. If someone from the Federation of BiH were to acquire a hotel in the heart of Kozara through an Arab company, who could guarantee that the memory of Kozara would be preserved in its authentic form or that it would not become subject to historical revisionism and differing interpretations?

"Where similar companies have become involved, we have witnessed what we describe as aggressive historical revisionism - the erasure of the Serb presence from the history of Sarajevo, the appropriation of Serb historical heritage and continued attacks on and relativization of Serb victims," the article says.

In that context, it says the question also arises of how Republika Srpska intends to protect facilities and sites of particular national importance.

"Possible mechanisms include strengthening domestic investment, greater scrutiny of ownership structures and legal instruments that would prevent potential abuses or changes to the intended purpose of such sites," the article underscores.

Preserving Kozara and other memorial sites goes beyond economic and tourism interests, the article concludes, saying the area has exceptional historical, cultural and identity-related significance, making full transparency, clear justification and a responsible approach by the competent institutions essential in any decision concerning its future.
