PALE, OCTOBER 20 /SRNA/ – Liberal globalism poses the same threat to Slavic peoples as fascism once did, a phenomenon that historians today refer to as "young Nazism," Russian Ambassador to BiH Igor Kalabukhov said.

Kalabukhov noted that the International Academic Conference on Genocide against Slavic Peoples in the 20th Century, being held in Pale today, represented another contribution by Republika Srpska and Russia to this important topic.

He pointed out that recent history presented far too many challenges and that knowledge of history was necessary to combat them efficiently.

"We can see Nazism raising its head again. Throughout history, we have seen that liberal globalism poses the same threat to Slavic peoples as fascism did," Kalabukhov told the press.

He said that a combination of liberal globalism and neo-Nazism was evident today, particularly in Ukraine, and that the aim of Russia's special military operation was to prevent this.

"At a certain point in history, we may have been too naive. We thought that the period following the Soviet Union would be an era of understanding, love and positive attitudes, but we can see that our opponents are using every opportunity to continue undermining Russia. That is why we must be strong and united in defending our national interests," Kalabukhov said.

He noted that some claim to have national interests in matters thousands of kilometres beyond their borders and justified their actions on that basis.

"On the other hand, we are not allowed to defend our interests on our own doorstep. That is why it is very important to connect history with the origins of these negative processes. The future is also important, which is why we must be aware of our duty to pass our experience on to younger generations," Kalabukhov concluded.

The International Academic Conference entitled "Genocide against Slavic Peoples in the 20th Century" is organised by the Institute of Historical Sciences of the University of Istočnot Sarajevo.
