GOLUBOVIĆ: SUPPORT FOR WRITTEN WORD AND STRENGTHENING READING CULTURE

BANJA LUKA, September 21 /SRNA/ - Republika Srpska Minister of Education and Culture Borivoje Golubović stressed that books preserve memory, language and culture, while also creating space for knowledge, new ideas and generations of creators, and invited citizens to visit the International Book Fair in Banja Luka starting tomorrow.

Golubović told SRNA that this year's 31st International Book Fair also carries special symbolism as it is being held in the year marking two centuries since the founding of Matica Srpska, one of the most important institutions of Serbian culture.

"Two centuries of Matica Srpska testify to the strength and longevity of an institution that has preserved and developed our language, literature and culture for generations. That is why this anniversary is an opportunity to once again highlight the importance of books and reading, particularly among children and young people," Golubović stressed.

Golubović highlighted the importance of supporting the written word and creative work with the aim of building and strengthening a culture of reading, noting that the Ministry recognizes the importance of the fair and has provided financial support for its organization this year as well.

"For more than three decades, this fair has brought together writers, publishers and readers and represents one of the important events in the cultural life of Republika Srpska. It is a place where we promote books, domestic creative work and a culture of reading, while also providing our writers and publishers with an opportunity to bring their works closer to the public," Golubović said.

He stressed that it was necessary to restore to books the dignity they deserve and put creators, writers and publishers at the forefront.

"The Banja Luka Book Fair has become one of the most recognizable cultural events, promoting our contemporary writers and publishers, enriching the domestic literary scene and providing an opportunity to exchange views on contemporary trends in literature, art and society," Golubović said.

The Banja Luka 2026 International Book Fair, organized by Glas Srpske, will open tomorrow at 18:00 at the Borik Sports Centre.

At the fair, which will remain open until Monday, September 28, leading publishing houses and cultural institutions from Republika Srpska, Serbia and the region will present their publications.
