ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS ATTEND A CALLIGRAPHY WORKSHOP

FOČA, SEPTEMBER 8 /SRNA/ - Students from the Sveti Sava and Veselin Masleša schools in Foča learned the skills of writing in the medieval Cyrillic script known as "ustavno pismo," mastering the art of calligraphy and learning about this form of art at a calligraphy workshop held in Foča to mark International Literacy Day.

With great patience and calm, precise strokes, the students turned Cyrillic letters on paper into small works of calligraphic art. Academic graphic artist Dejan Radmilović of Čajniče led the workshop and showed them how important precision, concentration, and a sense of form are in this art.

"The number of children who took part and showed an interest surprised me. I hope they will continue practicing calligraphy and take part in various competitions. There is no rushing when it comes to calligraphy; you write one stroke at a time, one letter at a time, one word at a time. Achieving aesthetic and spiritual value requires complete calmness," Radmilović said.

Radmila Prvulović, acting director of the Foča Cultural and Information Centre, said that calligraphy, as the art of beautiful writing, is part of Serbian tradition and spirituality.

"This is evidenced by the Miroslav Gospel, the oldest and most famous monument of Cyrillic script and Serbian literature, which UNESCO has also recognized," Prvulović said.

This activity is also part of broader cooperation among cultural institutions in the Upper Drina region, initiated and supported by the OSCE Mission to BiH.

World Literacy Day is observed on September 8, after UNESCO established it in 1967.
