DODIK: SPOMENKO GOSTIĆ'S NAME WILL FOREVER BE REMEMBERED IN HISTORY OF SERB PEOPLE AS SYMBOL OF COURAGE AND LOVE FOR THE HOMELAND

BANJA LUKA, AUGUST 15 /SRNA/ – Some names remain etched in history despite the passage of decades, becoming enduring symbols of courage, bravery and love for the homeland. One such name is undoubtedly that of Spomenko Gostić, a boy who showed remarkable courage and devotion to his home, village and people during the most difficult of times, President Milorad Dodik stressed.

"Spomenko was a boy who, at the age of not quite 15, overnight stepped from a carefree childhood into the adult world. Into a world of war and difficult wartime years - immediately experiencing all its brutality. His life was short, but the mark he left behind is deep and everlasting," Dodik said in a statement to SRNA on the occasion of the "Spomenko’s Days of Ozren" event, held to symbolically pay tribute to Spomenko Gostić, the youngest decorated fallen soldier of the Army of Republika Srpska, on the anniversary of his birth on August 15.

Dodik stressed that instead of school desks, childhood mischief and first school romances, Spomenko’s life was thrust into the harsh reality of war.

"Spomenko was not merely the youngest soldier, but a child who, together with adults, carried the heavy burden of war and experienced its consequences in the harshest possible way. Fate played a cruel game with this innocent boy. After being orphaned during the Defensive-Patriotic War, and then losing his grandmother, the only person he had left as his sole support, Spomenko was left alone in his village of Jovići on Ozren.

"After all the tragedies that his young heart experienced and survived, the 15-year-old boy refused an offer to be taken away from the horrors of war. Instead, together with his older comrades, he became a member of the Army of Republika Srpska. He did not want to leave his home, his hearth, his Jovići or Ozren, believing that one day he would live to see freedom in his Republika Srpska," Dodik said.

Unfortunately, he added, a Muslim shell cut short the young life and the boy's dreams of freedom and a better life.

"Today, Spomenko would be a mature 48-year-old man, a husband and a father. But he is no longer among us. Although his earthly journey was short, Spomenko lives on through us thanks to his courage, patriotism and dignity.

And whenever we speak of Spomenko and remember his deeds, his final words to his comrades always echo: 'Stay brave, do not run from the front line and fight as you should!' This is also a message to us who live in freedom today in Republika Srpska, into whose foundations he also built his life, which had only just begun," President Dodik stressed.

He emphasized that this message was not simply the words of a boy, but the legacy of a Serb soldier who entrusted us with preserving Republika Srpska just as Spomenko preserved his village and his Ozren.

"His words are immensely powerful, weighty, profound and significant. Just as his sacrifice is a pledge, so too are these words a pledge that we preserve Republika Srpska, that we remain united in its defense, just as our brave soldiers were united - they in the trenches, and we at the negotiating table, engaged in the same task. Therefore, let us preserve Republika Srpska because it is our home, our hearth and our legacy; let us preserve it for Spomenko and the many comrades who gave their lives to preserve what we have today.

Therefore, may they be eternally honored and may they rest in peace. We must never forget them, nor will we. The memory of Spomenko and all Serb victims lives on and will continue to live in the hearts of all of us who love and value Republika Srpska, life, peace and freedom," Dodik said.
