BANJALUKA, OCTOBER 23 /SRNA/ – President Milorad Dodik stated that the establishment of the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH 34 years ago was a magnificent event in the political and national history of the Serb people, and a clear sign that Serbs wanted to decide their own fate.
"The Serb people then were determined and united. I am proud of the fact that I was among those who took part in the formation of the Assembly of the Serb People," Dodik said.
He emphasized that the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH made crucial decisions, such as the foundation of Republika Srpska on January 9, 1992.
"Later, it adopted the Constitution on February 28, and on May 12 passed the Law on the Formation of the Army of Republika Srpska, which led the defense of our people," Dodik said.
Those who led the political processes at that time, he noted, had a long-term vision and a deep understanding of the character of Sarajevo and of the Muslim tendency to dominate the entire BiH.
"That national movement, which united the entire people, was then led by the Serb Democratic Party /SDS/ as a national movement, something the party no longer resembles today. However, recognition must be given to everyone - the late Momčilo Krajišnik, and all the leaders of that period: Radovan Karadžić as president, Biljana Plavšić, Nikola Koljević, as well as all representatives, both from the government and the opposition, who stood together on the key national issues," Dodik stated.
He added that this will remain a lasting part of the memory of the Serb people and the Serb political thought, adding that younger generations should learn from that model of behavior in crucial moments.
The National Assembly of Republika Srpska was founded on October 24, 1991, as the Assembly of the Serb People in BiH.
The decision to establish it was made by the representatives elected in the 1990 autumn elections.
On the same day, during the Assembly's constitutive session, several other acts were adopted, including the Decision on the Serb People Remaining in the Unitary State of Yugoslavia and the Decision on Holding and Conducting a Referendum of the Serb People in BiH.
On January 9, 1992, the representatives of the National Assembly of Republika Srpska adopted the Declaration on the Proclamation of the Republic of the Serb People of BiH. This date is now celebrated in Republika Srpska as the Day of the Republic.
On February 28, 1992, the Assembly adopted the Constitution of Republika Srpska and the Constitutional Law for its Implementation, thereby formally establishing the state-legal subjectivity of the Serb people.
