WWII MINE DISCOVERED IN THE DANUBE

BRATISLAVA, AUGUST 4 /SRNA/ - A World War II naval mine has been found in the Danube River in Slovakia after water levels in the river dropped.

Police closed that section of the Danube near the village of Virt, east of Bratislava on the Hungarian border, and the restrictions also applied to recreational boats.

After an examination by explosives experts, police said that it was a British anti-ship mine from the Second World War, DPA reported.

During the war, strategic locations in the Slovak capital were heavily bombed, including the Apollo oil refinery and the nearby Danube port.

Naval mines were dropped from aircraft to disrupt the transport of military supplies along the river.
