VUČIĆ HANDED OVER PRESIDENTIAL DUTIES

BELGRADE, SEPTEMBER 28 /SRNA/ - Aleksandar Vučić handed over the duties of president of the Republic this morning to National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić, who will serve as acting president until a new head of state is elected.

Under the Constitution, the speaker of Parliament serves as acting president and may remain in that role for no longer than 90 days.

Vučić resigned as president of Serbia last night, saying he wanted to take part in the upcoming parliamentary elections as an ordinary citizen.

He said he had carried out his presidential duties faithfully, honorably and honestly.

Presidential elections are called by the speaker of Parliament.

No fewer than 30 and no more than 60 days may pass between the calling of the election and polling day.

Serbia's early parliamentary elections are scheduled for Oct. 25.
