BIJELJINA, MAY 27 /SRNA/ – At the Cannes Film Festival on May 28, 1995, the film "Underground – Once Upon a Time There Was a Country", directed by Emir Kusturica and written by Dušan Kovačević, won the Palme d'Or.
"Underground" brought together the leading figures of Serbian cinema at the time – Miki Manojlović, Lazar Ristovski, Mirjana Joković, and Slavko Štimac.
Kusturica won a total of two Palme d'Or awards at Cannes – for "Underground" and "When Father Was Away on Business", as well as the Best Director award for the film "Time of the Gypsies".
These remain the only Palme d'Or awards won to date by a Serbian and former Yugoslav film director.
In addition to these awards, Aleksandar Petrović was also honored at the Cannes Film Festival for the film "I Even Met Happy Gypsies", which received the Grand Prix, while Milena Dravić was awarded for her role in the film "Special Treatment".
