BIJELJINA, MAY 27 /SRNA/ - The film "Underground – Once Upon a Time There Was a Country," directed by Emir Kusturica and written by Dušan Kovačević, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival on May 28, 1995.
"Underground" brought together the leading Serbian actors of the time - Miki Manojlović, Lazar Ristovski, Mirjana Joković, and Slavko Štimac.
Kusturica has won two Palme d'Or awards at Cannes - for "Underground" and "When Father Was Away on Business," along with the Best Director Award for "Time of the Gypsies."
These are the only Palme d'Or awards ever won by a Serbian or ex-Yugoslav director.
In addition to these accolades, Aleksandar Petrović received the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival for his film "I Even Met Happy Gypsies," and Milena Dravić was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in "Special Treatment."
