SKOPLJE, AUGUST 18 /SRNA/ - West Nile fever has claimed its third victim in North Macedonia.

A 61-year-old patient from Skopje, who had several underlying health conditions, died over the weekend at the University Clinic for Infectious Diseases, the Telma news portal reported.

A total of 35 cases and three suspected cases of West Nile fever have been confirmed so far, while six patients are in critical condition in intensive care at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases. All of them are over 60 and have underlying health conditions.

Of the confirmed cases, most patients are being treated at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases, while one patient is being treated at a private healthcare facility.

The Municipality of Đorče Petrov began emergency mosquito spraying last night in an effort to quickly and effectively reduce the mosquito population and protect the health and quality of life of residents.

The emergency mosquito-control measures are being carried out following the declaration of an outbreak of West Nile fever in the Skopje municipalities of Kisela Voda, Gazi Baba, Aerodrom, Butel and Ilinden, as well as in affected settlements such as Dračevo, Pržino, Dolno Lisice, Kadino and Jurumleri.
