STOP ACTIVITIES IN NORTHERN KOSMET THAT THREATEN PEACE

KOSOVSKA MITROVICA, AUGUST 24 /SRNA/ - The Eparchy of Raška and Prizren called for a halt to activities in northern Kosovo and Metohija that threaten peace and coexistence, after a mural depicting the late Patriarch Pavle and Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral was painted over with the assistance of the Kosovo police.

A press release states that this act further destabilizes the security situation and inter-ethnic relations, particularly in northern Kosovo, and that such provocative and unilateral actions not only fail to contribute to dialogue and peaceful coexistence, but also make it more difficult to find ways for all citizens to live peacefully.

It emphasizes that Patriarch Pavle and Metropolitan Amfilohije of Montenegro and the Littoral are among the most respected hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church in recent history, who left a profound mark on the memory of the Serbian people, particularly in Kosovo and Metohija, where they regularly came to provide aid and support in the most difficult times.

The Eparchy of Raška and Prizren appeals to local institutions, particularly in northern Kosmet /Kosovo and Metohija/, to refrain from provocative activities that further endanger peace and the security of citizens, and instead commit to building trust rather than fueling divisions along ethnic and religious lines.

They stated that they expect international representatives to raise their voice regarding this and other provocative incidents, sending a clear message that the destabilization of peace and security, along with mounting pressure on Kosovo Serbs aimed at inciting ethnic conflict and division, is not in the interest of those who wish to preserve peace and uphold fundamental democratic values.

The press release emphasizes that all relevant decisions, particularly in municipalities with a majority Serbian population, should be made in coordination with the local community, and not unilaterally and arbitrarily, without consideration of the possible consequences.

Murals in North Mitrovica dedicated to the late Patriarch Pavle and Metropolitan Amfilohije were painted over early this morning in the presence of members of the so-called Kosovo police. The graffiti reading “No Way Back from Here,” which had become a recognizable symbol of North Mitrovica, was also painted over.
