BELGRADE, MAY 9 /SRNA/ - Victory Day is a very important date for the entire Serbian people because Serbs were on the right side of history and fought against Nazism and fascism during World War II, Nikola Vukelić, State Secretary at Serbia's Ministry of Labor, Employment, Veterans, and Social Affairs, told SRNA.

"We value those achievements. Now, the problem is that some who were on the opposite side in the 1990s were privileged and received their own states and rights at the expense of the Serbian people," Vukelić said.

He recalled that, according to his statement, Croats and Muslims were largely on the side of Nazi Germany and fought against the Allies, while later in the 1990s they gained their own states.

Vukelić expressed hope that these historical injustices toward Serbs would be corrected in the foreseeable future.

He pointed out that Serbs in Croatia and BiH were removed from constitutional status as constituent peoples who had upheld that anti-fascist and anti-Nazi struggle.

Vukelić stated that this represents a major historical and legal absurdity and a great injustice committed against the Serbian people.

"All the more so when we consider that Serbs were not granted the right to self-determination, even though they are a constituent people, while Albanians in Kosovo were, despite being only a national minority and also having participated in World War II on the side of fascist and Nazi forces," Vukelić added.
